Job Description
About DATUM
A datum is the fixed reference from which every other measurement is taken. Nothing on a drawing can be placed without one. It is invisible in the finished building, and the whole building depends on it.
Datum brings carefully selected window and door systems, railings, partitions, screens, skylights and facade solutions to Nepal, and installs them with our own trained team. These are the systems that shape how a building meets the world around it, and we believe they belong to the same decision rather than to five separate ones.
We are opening an Experience Centre in Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu, where these systems can be opened, operated and understood properly before anyone commits to them.
We are building the first team now.
THE ROLE
The Technical Solutions Consultant is Datum's technical authority in the market, working across window and door systems, railings, partitions, screens, skylights and facade solutions. The role sits between engineering, product knowledge, specification and sales.
You will work primarily with architects, interior designers, consulting engineers and contractors, and directly with end clients where a decision turns on technical confidence. Most work is within the Kathmandu Valley, with travel across Nepal as projects require.
This is a founding role. The person in it will build Datum's technical function.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
Requirement and solution development
- Assess project requirements through site visits, drawings and consultation with the client and specifier
- Recommend the appropriate system, configuration and specification for the application, balancing performance, appearance, buildability and budget
- Advise architects and designers on configuration, sightlines, proportion and detailing across the product range
- Read, interpret and mark up architectural and structural drawings
- Establish the technical basis of every proposal: performance data, test evidence and project-specific calculations
Specification and technical sales
- Secure specification with architects, designers and consulting engineers, and carry opportunities through to award
- Deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations and knowledge sessions at the Experience Centre and at client offices
- Prepare technical submittals, mock-up proposals and the technical content of tender and bid responses
- Prepare take-offs and technical inputs for costing
- Develop and maintain relationships across the architectural and construction community
Product and quality standard
- Own Datum's technical standards, and verify installed work against specification
- Review and approve shop drawings, and confirm the technical basis of an order before it is placed
- Liaise with manufacturers on technical queries, customisation, tolerances and lead times
- Deliver internal product and technical training
Market intelligence and reporting
- Analyse market trends, competitor systems, technical developments and recurring objections, and feed findings into product and specification strategy
- Build and maintain the technical library: system sections, details, CAD blocks, performance data and specification text
- Keep opportunity, visit and specification records current in the company's systems
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
An engineer from a civil, mechanical, architectural or related discipline who is comfortable in the field and wants to sell as well as advise. Experience with building materials, aluminium and glass, fenestration, facade systems, construction products, HVAC, mechanical or industrial products, or technical B2B sales is an advantage.
The ability to explain and demonstrate a technical product clearly and patiently, and to recommend what suits the site, the budget and the brief. An eye for how finished work should look matters here, because you will be advising design professionals on configuration, proportion and detailing.
Strong with numbers, measurements and technical data, with sound analytical and commercial judgement. Able to read and mark up drawings; AutoCAD familiarity preferred. Confident presenting to architects, engineers and senior decision-makers. Strong written and spoken English.
HOW THE ROLE IS MEASURED
Practices and professionals actively engaged, projects specified, technically-led opportunities converted, technical sessions delivered, quotation turnaround, technical accuracy, and the specification library built and used. Specific targets are set with you after joining and reviewed as the business develops.
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
You will develop deep product, performance and specification expertise, including hands-on training at our manufacturers' facilities, and be expected to pass it on to the team. Product and system training begins in the first week and continues through technical workshops and industry sessions, which the directors attend alongside everyone else.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
Preferred: 3 to 5 years in technical sales, specification, construction products, building systems, engineering or a related B2B environment. Full time and on-site, based in Kathmandu, with regular travel to sites within the Valley and across Nepal as projects require. Own two-wheeler or four-wheeler with a valid licence required. Travel, accommodation and related expenses are covered by the company.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Competitive and dependent on experience and capability, discussed directly with candidates as they progress.
SELECTION PROCESS
An initial conversation, an in-person interview, a short practical task discussed with us afterwards, and a final conversation before offer.
TO APPLY
Send your CV to [email protected] with your current location, current or most recent role, notice period and expected compensation. A short note on why the role interests you is welcome and will be read.
