Role Summary
The Staff Writer for Development covers Nepal Connect’s Development category: infrastructure, economy, health, education, technology, aid, environment, and urbanisation. The role requires data-informed journalism, disciplined sourcing, and the ability to write clearly about complex systems for an informed general readership.
Content Types and Formats
- Features: in-depth stories of 1,200 to 2,500 words, opening with a person or place and building to policy context, data, debate, and forward assessment.
- Analysis: 800 to 1,500 words on a defined development issue, following a thesis–evidence–counterpoint–synthesis structure.
- Q&As with development professionals, government officials, NGO representatives, and community members.
- Occasional cross-category pieces where development intersects with Current Affairs or History.
Requirements
Essential
- Track record of rigorous, data-informed journalism on development, policy, or social issues.
- Ability to write clearly and compellingly about complex systems for an informed general readership.
- Existing source relationships in Nepal’s development, government, or civil society sectors.
- Competence in reading and presenting quantitative data accurately.
- Strong sourcing and verification discipline.
- Fluency in written English to the British standard.
- Experience handling sensitive subject matter, such as poverty, displacement, and discrimination, without sensationalism.
Desirable
- In-depth knowledge of Nepal’s development context, including governance structures, major aid programmes, infrastructure challenges, and environmental pressures.
- Academic or professional background in social sciences.
