Job Description

The Lower Secondary Social Studies Teacher is responsible for guiding students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 through an engaging exploration of social sciences, including history, geography, civics, and economics. This role requires an educator who can make abstract concepts tangible and relevant, fostering critical thinking about society, culture, and the world. The teacher is expected to deliver a standardized curriculum, develop students' analytical and research skills, and prepare them for the increased academic rigor of the secondary level while nurturing informed, responsible, and curious citizens.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons in Social Studies for Grades 6, 7, and 8, covering:

  • History: Teach chronological thinking, cause and effect, and historical interpretation through units on ancient civilizations, national history, and world events.

  • Geography: Develop students' understanding of physical and political geography, map reading skills, climate patterns, and human-environment interaction.

  • Civics & Citizenship: Introduce concepts of governance, democratic processes, rights and responsibilities, constitutions, and active citizenship.

  • Economics & Social Issues: Explore basic economic principles, resource management, cultural diversity, and contemporary social issues at an age-appropriate level.

  • Design and implement project-based learning activities such as research projects, model making, debates, presentations, and field trips that bring social studies concepts to life.

  • Integrate technology meaningfully for virtual explorations, research, multimedia presentations, and interactive map work.

  • Connect historical and social concepts to current events to make learning relevant and encourage critical thinking about the world today.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the varied learning needs, interests, and abilities of all students.

Classroom Management & Culture

  • Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment where diverse perspectives are valued and thoughtful discussion is encouraged.
  • Implement clear, consistent procedures and routines that maximize instructional time and promote student responsibility.
  • Foster curiosity, critical inquiry, and respect for different cultures and viewpoints.
  • C. Assessment & Data-Driven Practice
  • Administer a variety of formative and summative assessments, including quizzes, unit tests, research projects, presentations, debates, and document-based questions.
  • Develop and use clear rubrics to assess student work, providing constructive feedback that guides improvement in analytical writing and research skills.
  • Analyze student performance data to identify learning gaps, inform instructional planning, and provide targeted interventions or enrichment.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of student progress, assignments, and behavior.
  • Prepare detailed report cards and conduct substantive parent-teacher conferences focused on academic growth, critical thinking, and class participation.

Student Support & Development

  • Support students in developing essential academic skills: note-taking, source analysis, constructing evidence-based arguments, and research techniques.
  • Guide students in making connections between different social science disciplines and understanding complex societal issues.
  • Monitor students' social-emotional well-being and support the development of empathy, cultural awareness, and ethical reasoning.
  • Identify students who may require additional support and collaborate with Special Educators and Counselors following school support processes.

Communication, Collaboration & Professionalism

  • Maintain proactive, clear, and regular communication with parents/guardians via digital platforms, newsletters, emails, and meetings regarding student progress and curriculum highlights.
  • Collaborate closely with Grade 5 and Grade 9 teaching teams for vertical alignment of the Social Studies curriculum and smooth student transitions.
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and whole-staff professional development.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning to deepen content knowledge and stay current with effective pedagogical strategies in social science education.
  • Contribute to school-wide events, such as social science fairs, heritage days, and model United Nations, and perform assigned duties (e.g., supervision).
Job Specification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.Ed.) with Social Studies as a major subject or a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences (e.g., History, Geography, Sociology)..
  • Minimum 2-3 years of full-time classroom teaching experience at the lower secondary level (Grades 6-8), with proven experience in delivering a comprehensive social studies curriculum.
  • Deep understanding of the prescribed national or regional curriculum for Lower Secondary Social Studies, including content standards and assessment frameworks.
  • Strong content knowledge across history, geography, civics, and economics, with the ability to make connections across disciplines.
  • Data literacy for assessment interpretation and differentiation expertise for diverse learners, including those needing remediation or enrichment.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology, interactive maps, digital resources, and learning management systems (Google Classroom, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to facilitate thoughtful class discussions and engage students in complex topics.
  • A strong team player committed to contributing to a positive and collaborative school culture.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position based at the Holy Vision Secondary School campus.
  • Standard school hours with additional time required for lesson planning, grading, project supervision, parent-teacher meetings, and school events.
