Job Description
Position SummaryWe are seeking a skilled and motivated Journalist based in Nepal to produce accurate, impartial and engaging content for an Australian audience.
The role involves researching, verifying and writing news stories, features and interviews about Australian and international current affairs. The successful candidate must understand the Australian media environment, identify relevant topics and consistently follow high editorial and ethical standards.
- research Australian and international news, current affairs and trending topics using credible sources;
- identify and propose timely, relevant and newsworthy story ideas;
- write news articles, features, interviews and other editorial content;
- conduct virtual interviews with sources, industry representatives and relevant stakeholders;
- monitor Australian news outlets, government announcements and other reliable sources;
- attend relevant online events, press briefings or media sessions when required; and
- maintain clear research notes and source records.
- verify names, dates, figures, quotations and other information before publication;
- use credible primary sources, including official government publications, reports and direct statements;
- proofread and edit content to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency and readability;
- clearly distinguish between facts, analysis and opinion;
- maintain accuracy, fairness and impartiality when presenting different perspectives;
- follow established editorial guidelines, style requirements and approval processes; and
- promptly report and correct any identified inaccuracies.
- develop effective headlines, summaries and supporting digital content;
- upload, format and update articles using a content management system;
- assist with social media updates and the distribution of published content;
- support the creation of multimedia content, including images, videos or infographics;
- comply with applicable copyright, privacy and confidentiality requirements; and
- contribute ideas to improve content quality and audience engagement.
- collaborate remotely with editors, managers and other team members in Australia and Nepal;
- participate in editorial meetings and planning sessions;
- respond professionally to editorial feedback and revise content as required;
- manage multiple assignments and meet agreed deadlines;
- communicate promptly when an issue may affect an assignment or deadline;
- maintain confidentiality regarding sources, unpublished content and company information; and
- demonstrate initiative and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
Education and experience
- bachelor’s degree or diploma in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, English or a related field;
- experience in journalism, reporting, content writing or editorial work through employment, internships, freelance assignments or student publications;
- strong interest in Australian news, current affairs and public-interest journalism; and
- a portfolio or samples of written work.
- excellent written and verbal English communication skills;
- strong writing, research, interviewing and storytelling abilities;
- sound knowledge of fact-checking and source-verification practices;
- understanding of journalistic ethics, impartiality and editorial standards;
- ability to analyse complex information and present it clearly;
- strong proofreading skills and attention to detail;
- ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with a remote team;
- ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines;
- basic knowledge of content management systems and digital publishing tools;
- proficiency in using social media for news research, distribution and audience engagement; and
- willingness to work according to Australian operational and publishing requirements when necessary.
- knowledge of Australian politics, society, business, education, law or public policy;
- experience writing for an Australian or international audience;
- training in digital media, investigative journalism or multimedia storytelling;
- experience in data journalism, social media strategy, podcasting or video production;
- familiarity with Australian government and regulatory information sources;
- experience with search engine optimisation and audience analytics; and
- familiarity with AP Style or another recognised editorial style guide.
