Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Tax Accountant (Australian Tax) to manage Australian individual tax compliance while developing specialist expertise in expatriate and non-resident taxation. In this role, you will prepare and review tax returns, provide tax planning support, manage Australian Taxation Office (ATO) correspondence, mentor junior accountants, and deliver exceptional client service.
Structured training will be provided to support your progression into an Expat Tax Specialist role within the first 12 months.
Work hours: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM.
Five-day work week (Monday–Friday).
Responsibilities of the Candidate:
- Prepare and review Australian resident, expatriate, and non-resident individual income tax returns in accordance with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements.
- Prepare and review all supporting tax documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Assist clients with tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities while maintaining compliance with Australian tax legislation.
- Review and interpret financial records, including income statements, deductions, rental property schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare amendments, objections, and responses to tax assessments when required.
- Liaise with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on behalf of clients regarding notices, assessments, and other tax matters.
- Conduct tax residency assessments and provide strategic tax planning advice.
- Interpret Double Tax Agreements (DTAs) and provide appropriate tax structuring recommendations.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and confidential client records in accordance with internal policies and compliance standards.
- Stay up to date with changes in Australian tax legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Mentor and support junior accountants by providing technical guidance and sharing knowledge.
- Contribute to process improvements, internal documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business, or a related discipline.
- Tax processing, bookkeeping, or related professional certifications are an advantage.
- Progress toward CA, CPA, or another professional accounting qualification is desirable but not essential.
Required Experience:
- At least 3 years of experience in Australian taxation, including resident and non-resident individual tax returns.
- Experience working in a high-volume accounting, tax, or outsourcing environment.
- Strong knowledge of Australian rental property taxation, depreciation, capital allowances, and client documentation.
- Hands-on experience using Australian Taxation Office (ATO) systems, including pre-fill reports, notices, amendments, and assessments.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience using Australian tax software such as HandiTax, Xero Tax, Class Super, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of Australian tax residency rules, foreign income reporting, foreign tax offsets, and non-resident taxation.
- Experience preparing rental property schedules and related tax calculations.
- Data management or client onboarding experience.
- Experience working with clients or team members across different time zones.
- Previous experience in a client-facing tax or accounting role.
Required Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian tax legislation for both resident and non-resident taxpayers.
- Solid understanding of accounting principles and Australian tax fundamentals.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and numerical skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to perform effectively under pressure, particularly during tax season.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, cloud-based document management systems, and Australian tax software.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills with a proactive and client-focused approach.
