BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Organizational Context

The United Nations World Food Programme has been working in Nepal since 1963, supporting the Government to improve food security, nutrition, as well as emergency preparedness and response and to graduate from least developed country to a lower middle-income status by 2026.

Since 1 January 2024, WFP has been implementing its Country Strategic Plan (2024-2028) with four strategic outcomes:

  • Outcome 1: Affected and at-risk populations in Nepal meet their food, nutrition and other essential needs before, during and after shocks and other stressors.

  • Outcome 2: School-age children and adolescents and nutritionally deprived groups in Nepal have improved education and nutrition outcomes and greater access to affordable, nutritious and safe diets, including through social protection programmes, by 2028.

  • Outcome 3: Smallholder farmers and climate vulnerable populations in Nepal benefit from climate-resilient and equitable food systems, sustainable livelihoods and climate-proof assets and services by 2028.

  • Outcome 4: Communities vulnerable to and affected by crises in Nepal benefit from improved common services and enhanced capacities of the Government and humanitarian and development actors by 2028.

Job Purpose

To perform general administrative and some specialized communications processes that support the creation of communications content and the delivery of communications services aimed at maintaining and enhancing WFP’s visibility and reputation and supporting fundraising activities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority)

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Associate and the overall supervision of the Head of Partnerships, Communications and Reporting (PCR) Unit, the Communications Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  1. Coordination & Support: Provide coordination, administrative and specialized services, to support staff in the development, preparation and execution of communications plan for target audiences.

  2. Production Management: Monitor and coordinate production of communication materials, including schedules, facilities and clearances, logistics and provide support for special events, and video/film, photographic and multimedia projects.

  3. Media Monitoring: Monitor traditional and social media and report relevant information to the unit to inform the development and/or evaluation of communications activities and strategies.

  4. Research & Data: Conduct clearly defined basic research on WFP priority areas and compile information and data inputs to support communication products, briefs, visibility reports and provide data that enables informed decision-making.

  5. Content Creation: Under clear guidance, prepare high-quality creative and digital content such as video, audio, graphics and images for social media platforms and print publications, ensuring consistency with corporate messages, branding guidelines and standards.

  6. Platform Management: Support organizing and uploading media files in multimedia hubs and publish contents in diverse internal and external platforms following relevant clearance procedures.

  7. Brand Consistency: Distribute communications guidelines to WFP and partner staff to refer to when creating content.

  8. Database Management: Manage and maintain records and databases, such as journalist and media outlet contact lists, to ensure the information is updated, accurate, organized and readily available.

  9. Inquiry Handling: Gather information for responses to queries and requests for support, following standard processes, and obtaining guidance to respond as required, to ensure timely and accurate resolution of all enquiries.

  10. Liaison: Under supervision, liaise with WFP staff in a timely manner, to support aligned activities and an effective approach to communications within WFP.

  11. Other Duties: Perform any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor(s).

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Education: Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate in the related functional area is desirable. Bachelor’s degree in Media, Communication, Digital Marketing, or Journalism is considered desirable.

  • Experience:

    • A minimum of 5 years of progressive work experience in communication activities and strategies.

    • Demonstrated ability to perform routine communication techniques and activities, videography and photography through day-to-day work.

    • Experience supporting and providing ad-hoc guidance to new staff members.

    • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for completion of a range of communications processes and activities requiring some interpretation of standard guidelines and practices.

  • Knowledge & Skills:

    • Proactiveness, good collaboration, interpersonal, networking, and communication skills.

    • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team.

    • Time management and ability to meet deadlines.

    • Attention to detail and an eye to understand visual quality and graphics.

    • Experience in working with tools for graphic design and video editing like Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, etc.

    • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences.

  • Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Nepali languages.
