Job Description

The Area Sales Manager (ASM) – FMCG is responsible for driving retail sales, expanding distribution, and ensuring strong in-market execution across assigned territories. This role focuses on building a robust distributor network, increasing outlet coverage, and maximizing product visibility and offtake in general trade and modern trade channels.

Key Responsibilities

Sales Execution & Target Achievement

  1. Achieve monthly and quarterly sales targets (primary & secondary)
  2. Drive volume growth and market penetration for FMCG products
  3. Ensure consistent sales growth across all assigned territories

Distributor Management

  1. Appoint, develop, and manage distributors
  2. Monitor distributor ROI, stock levels, and credit cycles
  3. Ensure timely billing, stock replenishment, and liquidation

Retail Expansion & Coverage

  1. Increase numeric and weighted distribution
  2. Expand coverage in general trade (kirana stores, pharmacies, mini marts)
  3. Strengthen presence in modern trade outlets and supermarkets

In-Market Execution

  1. Ensure availability of all SKUs at retail outlets
  2. Maintain strong shelf visibility and product placement
  3. Implement POS materials, displays, and branding activities

Team Management

  1. Lead and supervise Territory Sales Officers (TSOs) / Sales Representatives
  2. Conduct regular market visits and joint field work
  3. Set daily, weekly, and monthly sales targets for the team

Promotions & Trade Schemes

  1. Execute trade promotions and consumer offers
  2. Monitor effectiveness of schemes and in-store activations
  3. Coordinate with trade marketing for campaigns

Market Intelligence

  1. Track competitor pricing, schemes, and product launches
  2. Identify gaps in distribution and new market opportunities
  3. Provide actionable insights to management

Reporting & Controls

  1. Submit daily/weekly sales reports and market feedback
  2. Track sales performance vs targets
  3. Ensure discipline in billing, collections, and expenses
Job Specification
  1. Bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, or related field
  2. 3–6 years of FMCG sales experience (retail-focused)
  3. Proven experience in distributor and territory management

  1. Secondary sales growth
  2. Numeric & weighted distribution
  3. Outlet productivity (sales per outlet)
  4. SKU-wise availability
  5. Visibility compliance (displays, shelf share)
  6. Distributor performance & ROI

  1. Strong understanding of FMCG retail dynamics
  2. Excellent negotiation and relationship-building skills
  3. Hands-on approach with strong field execution capability
  4. Data-driven decision-making and reporting skills

Additional Requirements

  1. Willingness to travel extensively within assigned territory
  2. Strong local market knowledge
  3. Experience in launching new products is a plus
  4. Vehicle along with valid license
