Job Description

Responsible for producing accurate, detailed engineering drawings and models for steel structures, ensuring compliance with project specifications, building codes, and industry standards, bridging the gap between design concepts and fabrication.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

Design & Documentation:

  • Develop and prepare detailed 2D/3D CAD drawings, plans, and BIM models for structural steel.
  • Incorporate engineer's calculations, specifications, and architectural requirements into drawings.
  • Create comprehensive documentation packages, including layouts, elevations, sections, and connection details.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) and material lists for procurement.

Technical & Compliance:

  • Apply structural drawing techniques and conventions for clarity and accuracy.
  • Ensure drawings meet industry standards, building codes, and project specifications.
  • Perform calculations for material quantities and weights.
  • Review and incorporate feedback, making necessary revisions to designs.

Collaboration & Support:

  • Work closely with structural engineers, architects, and fabrication teams.
  • Assist in preparing tender documents and project proposals.
  • Conduct site visits to verify completed work against designs.
  • Provide technical support and solve design ambiguities for fabricators.

Software & Tools:

  • Proficiently use CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit) and potentially structural analysis/modeling tools (Tekla, Advance Steel).
Job Specification

NBC 105:2020, 105:2025: For seismic design parameters in Nepal, crucial due to high earthquake risk.

  • NBC 111 (Draft): General design requirements for steel structures, focusing on safety and material quality.
  • IS 800: Indian Standard for general design of steel structures, heavily influences local practice.
  • IS 1893: Indian Standard for seismic design, used for earthquake load calculation.

Design Process & Tools

  • Analysis Software: ETABS, SAP2000 are commonly used for modeling and analysis.
  • Loads: Design must account for dead, live, floor finish, wind, and significant earthquake loads (NBC 105).
  • Seismic Philosophy: Design aims for safety and ductility, recognizing Nepal's seismic vulnerability.

Material Specifications

  • TMT Rebars: Essential for concrete ductility and strength, preferred over other rebar types.
  • Steel Quality: Materials and fabrication must meet standards for strength and welding quality (e.g., IS 18168 for detailing).

Tools & Software:

  • CAD Software (AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, SDS/2)
  • BIM Platforms
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor in Civil engineering or related field. (Master degree in Structural engineering preferred)
  • Software Proficiency: Strong skills in AutoCAD, Revit, BIM platforms, or Tekla.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of structural steel, fabrication, and erection processes, plus relevant building codes.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy for precise technical drawings.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
