Job Description
The English Teacher is responsible for guiding students in Grades 8, 9, and 10 through a critical phase of language and literary development. This role requires an educator who can inspire a deep appreciation for literature while honing advanced skills in writing, critical analysis, and verbal communication. The teacher is expected to deliver a rigorous, curriculum-aligned program, prepare students thoroughly for their secondary board examinations, and foster the analytical and expressive skills necessary for academic success beyond Grade 10.
Key Responsibilities
A. Curriculum & Instruction
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons in English Language and Literature for Grades 8, 9, and 10.
- Language Arts: Teach advanced grammar, vocabulary expansion, and nuanced writing skills. Guide students in composing various text types, including essays, reports, formal letters, and creative pieces, with a focus on clarity, structure, and style.
- Literature: Facilitate in-depth analysis of prose, poetry, and drama from the prescribed texts. Develop students' abilities to identify themes, literary devices, character development, and authorialintent.
- Prepare students rigorously for internal assessments and external board examinations (e.g., SEE or equivalent), utilizing past papers and mock tests to build confidence and test-taking stamina.
- Design and implement project-based learning that encourages independent research, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
- Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance lessons on literature, language, and contemporary media.
B. Classroom Management & Culture
- Establish and maintain a dynamic, respectful, and intellectually stimulating classroom environment conducive to discussion and debate.
- Implement clear expectations for academic integrity, responsibility, and collaborative learning.
- Foster a classroom culture where students feel safe to express ideas, ask questions, and engage critically with complex texts.
C. Assessment & Data-Driven Practice
- Design and administer a variety of formative and summative assessments, including literary analysis essays, creative writing pieces, grammar quizzes, presentations, and end-of-term examinations.
- Utilize detailed rubrics to provide constructive feedback that guides student improvement in writing and analysis.
- Analyze student performance data to identify learning gaps, inform instructional planning, and provide targeted support or enrichment.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, assignments, and grades in line with school policies.
D. Student Support & Development
- Support students in developing advanced academic skills: critical thinking, textual annotation, research techniques, and structured essay planning.
- Mentor students in their intellectual and personal growth, encouraging a lifelong interest in reading and effective communication.
- Identify students requiring additional academic support and collaborate with the Special Educators or Counselors to provide necessary interventions.
E. Communication, Collaboration & Professionalism
- Maintain proactive, clear, and regular communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for development via digital platforms, reports, and meetings.
- Collaborate closely with the Grade 7 and Grade 11 teaching teams to ensure vertical alignment of the English curriculum and smooth transitions for students.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and whole-staff professional development.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning to stay current with literary criticism, pedagogical strategies, and examination board updates.
- Contribute to school-wide events, such as literary weeks, debate competitions, and publication of school magazines, and perform assigned duties (e.g., supervision).
Job Specification
- Master’s Degree in English (M.A. English) is required.
- Minimum 2-3 years of full-time classroom teaching experience at the secondary level (Grades 8-10), with a proven track record of preparing students for board examinations.
- Deep understanding of the prescribed national or regional curriculum for Secondary English, including examination patterns and marking schemes.
- Exceptional command of the English language, both written and verbal, with the ability to model sophisticated communication.
- Strong data literacy for interpreting assessment results to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including those needing remediation or enrichment.
- Fluency with educational technology and learning management systems (Google Classroom, etc.) for instruction, assignment, and feedback.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with students, parents, and colleagues.
- A strong team player committed to contributing to a positive and professional school culture.
