Job Description

The full time Secondary Level Science Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, inquiry-based instruction in specialized science disciplines to students in Grades 8-10. This role requires a teacher who can effectively teach advanced concepts in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and/or Environmental Science, preparing students for higher education and careers in STEM fields. The teacher will cultivate scientific literacy, analytical thinking, and research skills while fostering intellectual curiosity and academic excellence during this critical preparatory stage.

Key Responsibilities

A. Curriculum Development & Instruction

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive, standards-aligned curriculum in specialized science disciplines for Grades 8-10, aligned with national/board examination requirements.
  • Design and facilitate advanced laboratory experiments, research projects, and independent investigations that emphasize rigorous application of the scientific method, data analysis, and scientific communication.
  • Differentiate instruction to challenge high-achieving students while supporting those requiring additional guidance, preparing all students for board examinations and competitive entrance tests.
  • Integrate advanced technology (data acquisition systems, simulations, computational modeling, research databases) to enhance investigation and understanding.
  • Connect scientific concepts to contemporary research, career pathways, and real-world applications (biotechnology, renewable energy, medical science, environmental conservation) to promote STEM career awareness.

B. Classroom & Laboratory Management

  • Create a classroom environment that functions as a safe, professional, and well-equipped laboratory for advanced scientific inquiry.
  • Establish and rigorously enforce all science lab safety protocols, procedures, and rules appropriate for handling advanced equipment and materials. Conduct comprehensive safety training for students.
  • Manage, maintain, and inventory sophisticated laboratory equipment, materials, and chemical supplies, ensuring their safe, responsible, and efficient use.
  • Foster a classroom culture of intellectual rigor, evidence-based debate, collaborative research, and ethical scientific practice.

C. Assessment & Evaluation

  • Utilize diverse assessment methods, including lab reports, research papers, practical examinations, scientific presentations, poster sessions, and board-style examinations.
  • Assess content mastery, experimental design skills, data interpretation, critical analysis, and scientific communication abilities.
  • Prepare students thoroughly for board examinations, standardized tests, and competitive entrance examinations.
  • Provide detailed, constructive feedback to guide student improvement in both conceptual understanding and advanced scientific practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, laboratory work, and assessments for reporting and college recommendation purposes.

D. Student Engagement & Support

  • Act as an academic advisor and mentor for students preparing for science-related higher education and careers.
  • Identify and nurture students with high aptitude for science, guiding them toward research opportunities, science competitions, Olympiads, and scholarship programs.
  • Support students in developing college application portfolios, including guidance on research projects and recommendation letters.
  • Promote advanced scientific literacy by teaching students to critically evaluate scientific literature, design experiments, and communicate findings professionally.

E. Communication, Collaboration & Professional Growth

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about academic progress, examination preparation, college readiness, and STEM opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Science Department on curriculum alignment, resource sharing, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Work with the Lower Secondary (Grades 6-8) science team to ensure smooth curricular transitions and build upon foundational concepts.
  • Participate actively in department meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), and relevant professional development (advanced lab techniques, research methodologies, STEM pedagogy).
  • Supervise or sponsor science-related extracurricular activities (Science Club, Research Team, Science Olympiad preparation, Environmental Action Group).
Job Specification
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science) or Engineering required; Master's Degree in a Science discipline or Science Education preferred. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or Post-Graduate Teaching Certification with specialization in Science Education mandatory. State/Board teaching licensure for Secondary Education required.
  • Experience: Minimum 4-6 years of successful teaching experience at the secondary level (Grades 9-12) with proven track record of strong board examination results. Experience managing an advanced science laboratory and supervising student research projects required.
  • Subject Expertise: Deep understanding of advanced concepts in specialized science disciplines; proven ability to prepare students for competitive examinations and higher education.
  • Instructional Skills: Mastery of inquiry-based and research-oriented pedagogy; ability to facilitate independent investigations and scientific discourse. Strong assessment literacy for board examination preparation.
  • Lab Safety & Management: Expert knowledge of advanced laboratory safety protocols and handling of sophisticated equipment and materials. Uncompromising commitment to safe practices.
  • Technology & Communication: Proficiency with advanced scientific instrumentation, data analysis software, simulation tools, and learning management systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for academic and professional contexts.
  • Collaboration: Strong team player contributing to departmental excellence and positive school culture; ability to work across grade levels for curricular alignment.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position following the academic calendar.
  • Work is split between classroom and advanced science laboratory; requires standing, supervising complex experiments, and managing specialized equipment for extended periods.
  • Requires preparation and handling of laboratory materials, including chemicals, biological specimens, and advanced scientific apparatus.
  • Time outside of school hours required for lab preparation, lesson planning, grading research papers and lab reports, student mentoring, and supervising extracurricular activities.
  • Participation in evening events (Science Fair, Parent-Teacher Conferences, School Counseling Sessions) expected.
